Research Areas:

The research in Li Yang’s lab is mainly focusing on developing novel computational methodologies and experimental technologies to decipher the complex regulation of RNA and DNA. Recently, the Yang lab has constructed and applied a series of efficient computational pipeline to demonstrate back-spliced circular RNA biogenesis and their functions at the whole transcriptomic level, including complementary sequence-mediated exon circularization (Cell 2014), alternative back-splicing and alternative splicing regulation (Genome Res 2016), and the involvement of circRNA in innate immune response by their specific intra-molecular structures (Cell 2019); in addition, by integrating high-throughput deep sequencing with computational algorithms developed in the lab, the Yang lab elucidated molecular mechanisms of transcriptomic regulation at several layers, such as the crosstalk between m6A modification and A-to-I RNA editing (Mol Cell 2018); finally, the Yang lab has collaborated to set up a spectrum of CRISPR/Cas-based base editing systems (Nat Biotechnol 2018). In the future, the Yang lab will continuously focus on developing new algorithms to analyze transcriptomic RNAs and to further understand their regulatory network and related molecular mechanisms during evolution.
